Yoga Six

Yoga Six is the newest wave of studios to hit Chicago.

I am a big fan.

My favorite part is the environment.  By now I've done a handful of classes at Y6 and I have to say that for a national chain, they're pretty cool.  But don't tie much to that.  There is nothing wrong with being a chain of yoga studios the same way that being 1:1 doesn't make a stu more soulful. (But any time a chain exists you have to wonder about the consistency and authenticity of your experience.  Here I have no doubt that these peeps are on top of their game and can say that the Yoga Six instructors are in it for the love.)

This space is just so chill.  In my experience the desk encounter is always a little quirky since they are brand new here, but once you're in the space you're in the zone.  The bathrooms are superb.  Dope shower area, razors, and this cool "air shower".  The air shower blasts you down after your flow to bring your temperature lower which is especially great for us Chicagoans headed in to wintertime elements aprés savasana.

There's a lot of orange and I wonder if it's because the color reps warmth, enthusiasm, and happiness. (?)

The studio floors are probably the greatest in the game.  They're padded and have parking spots on them.  That means that someone went through with a ruler and made marks to ensure that the class can fill comfortably. It's so freaking cool.  They borrow out towels and (Manduka) mats to those who forget or travel light. Personally, I'm a big fan of The Mat by lululemon athletica for all things hot yoga.

From what I understand the classes are formatted from corporate and then instructors just add their own flare from there.  (Which, so far, hasn't been disappointing.)  They also offer warm and hot classes as well as slower pace, deep/restorative, and the power/sculpty style.  The play lists are cool and I'm assuming created by the instructor as well.  (I've heard that chime stuff, the Super yoga chant music, and some Bone Thugs n Harmony).

Check em out!  Currently they are in Lincoln Park (Clybourn), the South Loop (Roosevelt Collection), and Gold Coast.

Lululemon Athletica Halsted is partnering with the Lincoln Park Yoga Six studio to offer free classes at 7:30PM on Tuesdays at their Clybourn studio.
The welcome to Y6 South Loop!

Trying to create a life where my actions match my word.. + my fitness inspirations [PICS]

So..

I don't think I've been to the gym in MONTHS.  I run, workout at home (rarely), and take fitness classes; but I haven't plugged in my earbuds and pumped iron in a very long time.

Yesterday I was getting SUPER stressed over something kind of stupid and it occurred to me that the super emotional side of me over the past few months probably is a result of my diet getting more dirty and my lifting getting more scarce!  Don't get me wrong.. I would always try to take classes that involved a lot of strength versus cardio, but it just isn't the same.

Because I'm on this mission to create possibility and greatness and this big, lovely, life for myself I realized that being a woman of my word (to myself and others) might just be the pivot point on the rest of my success.  Perhaps it's only a big part & not the center, but it's still major.  Keeping your word.. Living out your fantasies.. They're only an utterance and action away!  If I dream of running 5 miles in the morning (which I do) then I should just get up and go run them.  I shouldn't talk myself down to being more reasonable because of my schedule for the day, community, weather, etc.  I should simply do it.  Maybe I won't do it first thing in the morning every time, but I'll put it on my list of things to do and make the time for that greatness to appear in my life.  That connection between my behavior and my higher self where "proud" happens.  Those are my favorite moments.

In order for me to be this "woman of my word", I went ahead and reactivated my gym membership yesterday!  :  )  I'm so excited to get back in the best shape of my life.  Lifting heavy and often is my favorite way to break a sweat.  Alone.  My music.  My level.  My goals.  My time.  My drive.

I also think that this change will get my eating back on target as well.  There was a point where I ate like a bodybuilder.  Clean eating (ENOUGH CALORIES FOR MY LIFESTYLE.. NO STARVING MYSELF), lots of water, simple recipes, real food.. all the time.  It got kind of scary though.  I was nowhere near having an eating disorder, but the amount of focus I had on my diet even starting to judge others for theirs.. it was ugly and it had to stop.  I definitely think that I took it too far when I backed off, but now that I know the two extremes then I am looking forward to finding my happy medium for my nutrition practices.  Basically truly adopting the Michael Pollan's mantra:  Eat food.  Not too much.  Mostly plants.

I am going to ease back into the gym, w/ split days, three days a week.  I used to do almost six days, but I gotta take baby steps.  I'll do, lower/upper/core OR lower/upper/full spread between Thursday, Friday, and Saturdays, when I can help it.  (I'll be in the gym three days a week, though.)  At least one yoga class per week.  One fitness class per week (probably cycling for a while.  I'm really bad at it and want to improve).  Maybe a tabata session in my home or at the gym or studio.  Not sure.  But it comes down to gym time @ 3 days per week, yoga once a week, a fun fitness class once a week, and I'll run often.  I know I want to get up to about 5 miles on average, but I just don't know how often I want to do it, yet.  I'm gonna give myself room to find my running sweet spot through the fall.

My vision for my ideal workout week starting in Winter '13 is (in no particular order)...
Day 1  3-5 Mile Morning Run + Bi's, Tri's, Chest
Day 2  3-5 Mile Morning Run + Back, Core
Day 3  3-5 Mile Morning Run + Glutes, Quads, Hammies (aka LEG DAY!! lol)
Day 4  3-5 Mile Morning Run + Yoga
Day 5  3-5 Mile Morning Run or Rest + Class
Day 6  3-5 Mile Morning Run + Cardio Day or Rest
Day 7  Rest Day or Active Rest Day :)

I am SOOOOOOOO excited to get back to ME!  I lost 30 lbs by being me and I'll get stronger by being me.  Drooling at the thought of amazing shoulder, ab, and glute definition.  Excited by the potential sounds of clinks and weights dropping to the floor.  Sweat.  Life.  Love.  PASSION.  Get ready America *super hero finger point*cape flapping in the wind* it's ON.  :  )  YAY!!

LATER!!  OMW to the gym.

LOTS OF LOVE!

Melissa B.

BETTER THOUGHTS: The Longer You Wait, The Longer You Wait/DARE AND FEAR GREATLY

I'm learning in life that there are two types of people.  There are the 'daring' and there are the 'fearing'.  Both of them are necessary because they bring a balance to the world and keep things running smoothly.  Where it gets interesting is in the crux of the crossroads of the two.  Although there are ONLY the two types of people, there are a few of us who get a little confused by the road signs leading us down whichever path they are meant to be on.

Fearful people aren't weak or invaluable, but they are the people who honor the law and rules of the land.  They keep people organized and are super great at playing their role in the lives of their friends and their work environment.  They keep things steady and they definitely value a good reminding of what's what to who; where, why, when, and how.  I love fearful people.  I need more of them in my life.

The daring folks are the ones who really try to shake loose the foundations of this world.  They are trying to innovate and captivate every chance they get.  Daring people are not stable and because of that, they help get a lot of rules changed and perfected because they can't just settle for what they're handed.  They want to be free and they want to free others.  There is no norm, limit or restriction that you can put on a daring person.  No matter their capacity, they will find a way to rebel and make things better.  Daring people are dope and definitely should be a best friend to every one of us.

Together, the daring and fearful make the world go 'round.  That's why gang leaders, world leaders, heads of households, siblings and business partners who succeed tend to have a STAFF.  They do this because usually they lack one of these qualities and in order to make things, actions, or thoughts, popular, you have to be able to speak the language of all the people in your land, right?  So it's important to have a healthy balance of the two in your life.

As for the lost ones, of which I consider myself, we get to the crossroads of life that every one comes to and although we know we're daring (or fearing), we start to think that we should fear (or dare) where we really have no place playing that role!  Obviously are lives will be sprinkled with opportunities to role play and put the opposite skill into practice a lot of times; BUT it's usually pretty clear what your choice SHOULD be at each moment.  So we get stuck in some areas of life and we wait and wait and wait for a more clear sign to pop up alongside the road to tell us when to make our next move!

We'll make some progress from time-to-time, in these areas, but most of it is fleeting and not quantifiable.  So we wait and wait and drive along and the next thing you know, we're in the desert... waiting.  And waiting some more!

The good thing about confusion, hopelessness, and 'waiting' is that they are definitely a slave to Newton's laws of motion.  Which are, in summation--and in super laymen terms:

1.)  External force has a lot to do with how long something can go on.
2.)  The size of something and how fast it moves or long it goes on has a lot to do with that specific something's insides (? THAT'S A REACH)
3.)  Everything has a polar opposite because it needs to force pushing back on it to keep it going...or not going

And thus we have the solution to confusion, hopelessness, and 'waiting'!  It has everything to do with everything so we should stop acting like it's a very specific, personal, nuance, when in fact, it DOES matter whether or not you like where you live.  And it DOES matter whether or not you like yourself or your co-workers, etc.  The main point is that it all matters and it can all be changed by applying new forces on your own life.  The opposite of confusion is clarity.  It doesn't take much to ask your co-worker to really break down what he/she means about a project or even a side comment they made after a meeting the other day.

The opposite of hopelessness is hope!  (Duh-zies!)  Not hope as in a wish, but hope as in--what I believe is the Hebrew translation--of having a certainty in something.  The feeling of hopelessness between you and that guy can be stopped if you get CLEAR (wink) and then set your certainties on what you know to be true!  If you know it's not going anywhere, there's a certain power there because you can choose to stay or choose to walk away 'cause you not sitting and wishing for something that you're not sure about!

Finally, 'waiting'... Waiting for results, waiting for someone to come alongside you, waiting for a chance, and waiting for the perfect time!  The opposite force of 'waiting' is ACTION!  You can eliminate that confusing wait time for your daring or fearing self, by DOING exactly what you're good at!  If you're 'afraid' to approach your boss for a raise then don't do it the daring way, but do it your way.  Maybe you wait or maybe you use the employee handbook as your reference, but you gotta do SOMETHING, even if that something is nothing!  If you're finally ready to get super fit, don't start off with a cardio dance class, be daring and hit the weights with all the body builders you see at the bench press!

Regardless, the more you wait because you're not sure whether or not to be daring then the more time you spend waiting and being passed by signs that you might understand, but really feel confused, hopeless and paralyzed by.  The key is action, but the courage to step across the threshold is taking that action and doing it YOUR way.

I'm going to apply this by working out and accomplishing things the daring way each time I come to the crossroads.  Every time I feel confused I will really sit and take the time to get clear.  Every time that I feel hopeless, I will refocus my vision and behave in a more certain way.  Every time that I get tempted to wait, I will take the most daring action that I can take in that moment.  A few examples I have put them into practice over the past few weeks (or plan to soon) by:

CONFUSION:
1.)  Having a clearing with leadership at my job(s) as necessary.  (Done.)

HOPELESSNESS:
1.)  Revisiting my goals and vision and reminding myself what the real mission is and who it's for.  (Ongoing.)
2.)  Breaking my financial goals and responsibilities into more doable bite sized tasks versus being intimidated by my own damn money!  lol  (Starting now.)

WAITING:
1.)  I won't be afraid to ask my mentors and role models stupid questions about things that I need to grasp in order to get ahead in my career and life.  (Just did it yesterday.)
2.)  I will not wait until something inspiring comes along to remain super fit.  I'll just accept that I want to be SUPER FIT or nothing at all and embrace it versus blaming races, training, BHAGs*, on why I'm not always performing at my pique levels 24/7.  (Staring now.)

So how can you embrace your daring or fearing characteristics this week?  Where in your life can you afford to get more clear?  What will it take for you to live a life full of certain hope?  How long will it be 'til you stop waiting and start taking the actions that suit you the best?

I hope you can see how there are other people like you out here who are "kind of" and not just fully blazing ahead the way that instagram makes it look!  I also hope that you can also see how it can be done and doesn't just have to be about super big things.

So get to gettin' and don't forget to recruit some great people for your team and life balance.  As the ever lovely, Kim Kardashian, says:  "Teamwork will make the dream work."  We'll go deeper into that some other time.  Cool?

GOOD DAY!

How I Plan To Lose 5 Pounds In Five Weeks Following FIVE Simple Rules

So, if you don't know I'll say it again, I lost 30 lbs in a year (or two) and now I'm on the path towards being a part of the fitness industry in every way that I can.  One of my fears as I got closer and closer to my goal weight was, "What if I don't keep it off?"  I was afraid it would happen to me because it happens to a lot of men and women.  They flux weight in 10-20 lbs increments and they just seem so... happy and unhappy at the same time!

I always envision myself as a woman who glows.  I know I'm sleepy and upset sometimes, but when I think of me at 60 years old, I see a fit, postured, happy, happy, and glowing woman.  She knows that she knows a few things for certain and her confidence and ability just ooze from her pores.  Or I guess, from MY pores.

Lately, I haven't been glowing.  I am as on fire for health, wellness, fitness, love, life and all the other things as I have been, but--maybe it's the weather--I have just found myself in a little bit of a funk!  A funk that stinks enough that I weighed myself only to discover that I had gained seven pounds.  Two of them are muscle (I know because for a while I was doing a lot of workout challenges that had me in the gym almost seven days per week) and the other five are me becoming soft (literally...the muscle definition just isn't there).  Let's say some of it is lack of vigorous exercise and the other is poundage from salt and sugary snacks!

SO!  It's time to lose those pounds again and from there, figure out a way to keep them off.  I plan on doing this by working out at least five days per week for five weeks.  I'm going to have an 85/15 diet (85% healthy, clean, plant-based & 15% NOT).  I will drink water every day (at least one water bottle full) aiming to have 1/2 my body weight in ounces.  I will cook 2-3 meals per week.  I will also sleep 6-8 hours every night.  The bonus (for me) is to recruit five people to do it with me!  Not everyone has to lose 5 lbs., but everyone does have to follow these five rules.

For me, this has nothing to do with the weight and everything to do with how I feel.  I know what my body feels and looks like when it's operating at its best and this isn't it.  Snacking on junk food.  Skipping workouts.  Staying up past 12am looking at the internets... that's not my best me.  It makes me cranky, insecure, grey looking and whack.

So here are the rules one more time if you want to do it, too!

WHAT YOU CAN DO ON THE 5/5/5 PROGRAM  (5 LBS/5WEEKS/5 RULES):
1.)  Workout at least FIVE days per week*
2.)  Eat an 85/15 diet (85% clean-healthy/15% NOT)
3.)  Aim to drink at least half your body weight in ounces of water every day
4.)  Cook at least 2-3 meals per week
5.)  Sleep at least 6-8 hours every night

BONUS:  RECRUIT FIVE FRIENDS TO DO IT WITH YOU!

So far, I have two people.  I'm going to call a few more people and I really hope that one or two of the people I complete this with come from this blog post!

I am really excited about crushing this impromptu goal!  I wanted to wait 'til Monday, but why put off tomorrow what you can do today?  There are still five days left in the week and the rest of today.  Make the commitment and go.

P.S.  The most important thing to know is that you do NOT have to lose five pounds.  This is a personal goal and as I began to talk with my mom (Yep!  She was the first to sign on. HA!) she was like:  "Oh!  Five rules!" and my creative train just kept riding down that track.  So for you it could just be to get moving, maybe you want to gain some muscle, clear up your skin or lose 15 lbs!  Whatever it is, let's commit to being great and doing it together.

*These workouts are workouts that are authentic to you.  You don't have to map out this unrealistic, intimidating and rigid plan for this challenge.  We should have a plan in mind, but if you love ZUMBA, do Zumba every day.  If you want to try yoga or a free week of classes at a studio by your house or job... THAT COUNTS.  You can also consider buying some home workout DVDs, too!  Just make sure you're doing stuff that comes natural to you. *CHEERS*

HAVE SOME CLASS. 11 Ways to Get The Most Out of Your Group Fitness Classes

So, if you don't know, over the span of the last year or so, I've lost ±30 lbs through diet and exercise.  I believe that Summer 2012 is the first time that I hit my hard goal weight and the rest has been history.

I don't think that I've been concerning myself with keeping the weight off but more about keeping up the habit over a lifetime.  Lately I have been participating in a lot of class challenges and I feel like this is going to be the secret to my success of making it through the holiday/one year weight-loss "curse".  Even though I am a fitness instructor, not until these past two months have I really taken advantage of the team/class dynamic to working out!

Being in a room full of health nuts, enthusiasts, novices, conscious people (usually women) has a lot of perks!  Suddenly, this person who you probably made a few assumptions about as they stood across the room from you becomes your 'teammate' and your 'partner' at the third round and you're both doubled-over on the ground with hardly any steam left in you.  It's in those moments where you find yourself rooting for someone other than you and something bigger than you both!

Despite my LOVE for instructing fitness classes, I always thought that it was more beneficial to workout alone, amongst the weights, and really get all Rocky Balboa on 'em so that when my life became a movie, this could be a part of the montage...  I have been SO wrong.  So, so, wrong.

Classes add a great new dynamic, they give great ideas on techniques, you basically get to see a personal trainer for like $20 (give-or-take), you make friends AND you don't really have to think much about your workout!  The only downside is finding a place you like, correct variety, having to get over yourself and really utilize your instructor by asking questions, and not over or under doing it.

A love note on the steamy windows at the 'stairs' circuit in class yesterday.  We're doing a 30 Day/Class Challenge.  It reads, "I (heart) OYM" He-he-HELL!  That class was TOUGH!!
My advice to the class-head or the girl who has a little performance anxiety because of the group is this:

1.)  If your muscles are sore after the first day, don't take three weeks off until you come back for more!  If your muscles hurt after a straight run of classes for 90 days then it's time for you to sit down somewhere.

2.)  If your goal is to lose weight or 'tone', do at max THREE strength training classes per week (leaving ±24 hrs rest in between), at least THREE cardio classes per week, ONE stretching (think yoga) class per week, and at least ONE/at max TWO rest days per week.

3.)  If you are not going to take a yoga class and you're not going to stretch on your own, stay through the entire stretching portion of the class!  Stretching is probably one of the top five ways to succeed at life.

4.)  Ask questions.  Give your instructor a shout before, during, or after class.  They work for you.

5.)  It's your workout, not mine!  You pay to be here and I get paid to be here so taking it easy only effects one person in this relationship... YOU!  If you quit, do a half-ass crunch or insist on keeping bad form then that's on you, not me.  GET YOUR MONEYS WORTH, CHILD!!

6.)  The modified version is your friend.  The modified version does not mean easy.  Never sacrifice good form for anything.  If you like it, you'll keep taking the class so you will get stronger by default.  Bad form actually puts you at risk so if you're not sure, you know your limits or you're just madd tired... USE THE MODIFIED VERSION (PLEASE)!

7.)  Show up on time.  We warm you up and if you run in late (every time) and just start doing a stiff-legged deadlift w/o giving those hamies (hamstrings) a good warm-up, it could get real ugly for you.

8.)  Have water on your water break.  Drinking water every 15 minutes during a workout is great for your performance.  If there is no scheduled water break, just stop and get a sippy poo when you need it.

9.)  HAVE FUN!  Someone in that room is judging you and someone in that room is inspired by you.  Sometimes you're actually performing a lot better than you think and if you're not then  your instructor will tell you.  Loosen up a bit, doll.

10.)  Make friends.  Talk to people.  Bring friends/co-workers/crushes/husbands with you.  I read that you are only as successful as the five people you hang around most (?) and health is a big part of being alive so being SURROUNDED and acquainted with a few like-minded people is definitely going to boost your odds of being more amazing.

11 + randoms.)  Read the class description before you go.  If you're going somewhere for the first time, arrive 20 mins early so you can sign your life away, take gym tours & change clothes, etc.  Take a post-workout (protein-rich) snack for the ride home 'til your next meal.  BREATHE!  In through the nose and out through the mouth.

BONUS:  IF you do invite a friend to a class, be honest with yourself about this combination.  If your friend is going to slow you down or chat you up the whole time, workout with different people and then come together to compare notes at the end.  You'll know in your gut what you should do but definitely don't just throw them into something without a little confidence boost or something, first.

My BFF E.J. & I turkey trottin' on Thanksgiving Day
Finally, you don't ever have to take a class in your whole entire life!  Don't feel like because it's the latest trend that you have to join a single studio if that's not your thing.  Find what you love and if that means you love running alone, great!  At the same time, I feel like it's just a great benefit to have at least one person in your life and/or online who you can just sweat with or talk to about sweating and they don't give you that 'psycho' glare 'cause they can't relate. (**I think it's more important to have a real life friend over a cyber friend when it comes to this.)  Open yourself up!  It may not happen now, but as you grow more confident and in love with a certain style, you'll find yourself wanting to share this part of your life with someone and it will happen naturally.

GOOD LUCK! :)

Melissa
